Never mind the Polar Vortex, the Earth continues to warm

According to NASA and NOAA, 2018 was the 4th warmest year on record since 1890.

The Earth’s average surface temperature was 1.5 degrees above the average readings compiled from the period 1951 – 1980 during 2018. The only warmer years were 2016, 2017 and 2015. The past 5 years have been the warmest five years on record.

According to Gavin Schmidt, the director of the Goddard Institute of Space Studies (GISS), this warming was largely due to more emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses caused by human activity.

While the Earth has seen both hotter and colder episodes in its much longer history, scientists are concerned about the temperatures steep rate of increase over the course of very few years.
